Chronicles of crime: the crime news, as it unfolded, day by day. Based on the ongoing feature in True Crime magazine.
Chronicles of Crime: December 2007
True Crime News: 7/12/2007 Beverley Allitt
BEVERLEY ALLITT, who is serving 13 life sentences for attacking and murdering children in the hospital where she was a nurse, must serve a minimum of 30 years before being eligible for release. Although she was sentenced after her trial, the minimum term was not set until now.
The trial judge had originally recommended a 30-year minimum, which the then Lord Chief Justice agreed with, but no Home Secretary has since determined the minimum to be served and, under new rules, that task is now carried out by a High Court judge.
Beverley Allitt, a state enrolled nurse, was aged 31 when found guilty in 1993 of the murder of four young children and the attempted murder of a further three and of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to six more children. All the victims had been in her care in the paediatric ward of the Grantham and Kesteven general hospital in Lincolnshire. Evidence indicated that she suffocated some, and injected air or drugs into others.
When told news of the ruling at Rampton top-security psychiatric hospital, Allitt is reported to have flown into a rage. She was placed on Level 3 – the highest suicide watch level. One nurse must remain within touching distance of her at all times. Even magazines are banned in case she uses the staples to harm herself. Crime news stories from True Crime Library.
